The saddle is  built around a synthetic saddle tree with a choice of 2 thigh supports, the Lisa Wilcox or the generic Relevant supports. The supports help the leg to relax thereby creating a longer and deeper position so as to achieve a closer contact with the horse.

With soft, padded saddle panels and a wider channel of 5cm (2") the Relevant sits easily and comfortably on any horse.  Made of super soft calf leather, riding in this saddle makes you feel very comfortable and secure, ideal not only for dressage but also long distance, it will last a lifetime if cared for properly.

The Grand Gilbert saddle is made using the PS Baum Tree which is a "short pointed" tree wood laminate that is reinfored with Bamboo. As bamboo is a very flexible material this, coupled with the short pointed design helps the horse achieve lots of freedom of movement especially through the shoulder and offers the rider a greater close contact with the horse.

The treeless saddle typically has a seat made of foam padding covered with leather. The cantle and pommel are of fibreglass. The main difference between riding with a treeless as opposed to a treed saddle is that you may feel rather insecure and unbalanced at first and it can make you feel as if you are sitting "wide" as if riding bareback. But  persevere, you will soon get the hang of it and you will find that they are supremely comfortable and have the added advantage of a nice close contact.

A report in 2008 by the Society of Master Saddlers  said (amongst other things) that pressure points can occur beneath the stirrup bars, however this usually improves if riding  without stirrups or with a dressage style stirrup.  You can read more about this report in Yourhorse.co.uk  Of course, the SMS will have a biased view on this as with no tree  in the saddle they would be out of business.

At the end of the day, only you can make your own mind up.  Many people and horses are very happy with a treeless dressage saddle.

The saddle is available with traditional flock filled panels or with panels filled with the CAIR Panel System. As with other Wintec saddles it comes with the EASY-CHANGE Gullet System making it very quick and easy to change the width of the saddle to suit the makeup of the horse and, in the case of the novice horse, his changing shape as he grows and matures. Expect to pay slightly more for the CAIR Panel System.

The Wintec 500 is the ideal second saddle, great for schooling and pre-novice tests.
